HARARE – Investigative journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has been arrested for the umpteenth time in as many months.
Chin’ono was arrested by police at his home in Harare with information suggesting he faces charges of spreading lies, according to the indictment.
He allegedly tweeted ‘misleading information’ that a police officer used a baton to kill a baby strapped to his mother’s back.
Chin’ono announced his arrest in a tweet early Friday afternoon.
“The police came to arrest me! Let everyone know!
They say they accuse me of spreading lies because I tweeted that a child was beaten by a police officer and died! They are taking me to the Justice and Order Division of Harare Central Police Station,” Chin’ono said.
It has become the norm for the government led by Emmerson Mnangagwa to arrest those perceived to be critics of the regime, especially those who disclose their incompetence and corrupt dealings.
A number of activists and politicians have been arrested on trumped up charges, including Hopewell Chin’ono, Job Sikhala, Jacob Ngarivhume, Takudzwa Ngadziore, Jacob Mafume and Alan Nyoni topping the charts.
