HARARE – President Emmerson Mnangagwa on Tuesday appointed ailing Vice President Constantino Chiwenga as the new health minister, replacing Obadiah Moyo, who was sacked over a corruption scandal linked to the misuse of Covid-19 funds.

In a press release dated August 04, 2020, titled “His Excellency the President Appointment of Minister of Health and Child Care,” Chief Cabinet Officer Dr. Misheck Sibanda announced chilling development.

“In relation to Section 99 of the Constitution of Zimbabwe Amendments Act 2013 (No. 20), His Excellency the President, Cde ED Mnangagwa, has appointed the Vice President Dr. CDGN Chiwenga to the post of Minister of Health and Childcare,” the letter reads.

The Cabinet Secretary went on to explain the reason for the appointment, which is likely to send shivers down the spine of many in the struggling South African country.

“In taking this decision, His Excellency the President has identified the urgent need to stabilize, restructure and reform the national health system to better meet the challenges posed by the global Covid-19 pandemic while ensuring a rapid recovery of the national health system,” Dr. Sibanda wrote.

Chiwenga’s appointment is bad news for many Zimbabweans, who expected Mnangagwa and his government to listen to citizens’ concerns after surviving July 31 protests, despite the streets going wild with a demonstration of brute force of the security forces.
